Motorcycle Helmet VS Tactical Motorcylet Helmet
Whether it’s an inattentive car driver pulling out, a hidden patch of ice or even something as simple as a blow-out at high speed, the roads are full of dangers for even the most aware and careful riders. Dress for the slide, not the ride, should be the mantra of any safety conscious rider. Wearing appropriate safety gear can literally be the difference between life and death even in a relatively minor accident.
At the top of every list of essential safety gear for the modern rider is the motorcycle helmet. Not only is it a great idea, in most countries it’s the law for all riders to wear appropriate protective head gear. Some riders may be tempted to shy away from more motorcycling helmets in favor of cheaper alternatives including second-hand or surplus tactical helmets. Surely a helmet designed to protect the head from bullets and shrapnel will do the job of protecting it from asphalt?
The answer to that is a firm “No”.
A tactical helmet, while certainly better than nothing, just isn’t capable of offering you the same level of protection during a riding accident as a well-made motorcycle helmet.
The key is in the construction of the helmet and the type of protection it offers.

Military and Tactical helmets are designed to prevent penetration by guiding projectiles around a solid protective layer, creating a ricochet instead of lethal head wound. Motorcycle helmets on the other hand are intended to cushion and spread out the tremendous forces experienced not only by the point of impact but the whole head including the jaw and neck joints. They do this through layers of dense but crushable foam that slows down the impact and lessens the force experienced by the joints and most importantly, the brain. Tactical helmets don’t have this layer and so transmit much more of the force of a blow directly to your head making injury much more likely.
The choice becomes even easier if you are looking for a helmet that offers full face protection. Tactical helmets generally have very limited protection for the lower sides of the head and none for the face. Even a minor accident that involves an impact to the face or jaw can seriously injure a rider if they are not wearing a helmet designed to protect the face. Injuries here, even when successfully treated, can have serious and long-lasting consequences including temporomandibular joint disease, dizziness, chronic headaches or migraines and more.
The line between walking away from an accident and being seriously injured is as thin as the helmet you are using. Modern motorcycling helmets have decades of research helping to make them better at their specific job. Tactical helmets, as great as they may be at the job they were designed to do, just aren’t up to the same task.
